The literary sketch is numerous from Wei and Jin to Qing dynasty. It includes many useful matters, and is one of the important language materials. The study on colloquial words in literary sketch is a new visual angle in vocabulary research. Great progresses have been made on vocabulary research about literary sketch by some scholars. In the past, more attention is paid to vocabulary of middle history literary sketches, but less attention to those of Qing dynasty. The literary sketches in Qing dynasty include ample colloquial words and materials, which are vocabulary accumulation of different times, and are valuable to Chinese vocabulary research in Qing dynasty even to research of the whole Chinese vocabulary history. Up to now, the studies on the colloquial words in literary sketch in Qing dynasty are relatively poorer than those of Wei and Jin dynasty, and there is hardly systematic study in the concrete scope. This thesis tries to conduct a systematic discussion on colloquial words in literary sketch in Qing dynasty.In order to complete the thesis the author makes great efforts on the following aspects, (1) Collecting large numbers of first-hand materials of colloquial words and singling out more than 300 kinds of works from all the literary sketches in Qing dynasty. After investigation, the 2728 words of all the colloquial words used in Qing dynasty, besides the research of new and difficult words are focused. (2) Sorting and studying each of these words. Through description of different language facts, we get a perceptual knowledge about the colloquial words in literary sketch in Qing dynasty and development of them. (3) Studying these words systematicallyfrom the aspect of component, syllable, and semantic features, word-building and meaning shift. We form the outline of the figure of colloquial words in literary sketch in Qing dynasty with the help of a series of figures and summarize its developmental characteristic. Furthermore we get a bran-new rational knowledge about the situation of actual use of them, which deviated from classical language standard of this period.The thesis falls into 8 chapters. In chapter one, we introduce purpose of the research and outline the general situation, scope and characteristic of the literary sketch in Qing dynasty. We also analyze the diachronic origin of colloquial words. Research materials and approaches are presented in the end of this chapter.We divide the main body and core of the thesis into five parts: appellation; basic necessities of life; social life; spiritual life; universe. These are chapter two to chapter six respectively, in which each of colloquial words and its illustration are given in detail. For the sake of taking apart the meanings of each colloquial word fully and accurately as well as indicating its importance in research of Chinese history, we refer the colloquialism literature works in Ming and Qing dynasty. In longitudinal aspect, we also trace to the origin of every word by using influential dictionaries, and combine with modern dialect and spoken language.In chapter seven, the components and features of colloquial words are analyzed. The findings show that many new colloquial words come into use in literary sketches in Qing dynasty. But these newly appeared words are too short-living and too changeable.In chapter eight, we point out the value of studying colloquial words in literary sketch in Qing dynasty.
