Detachable words are a special language unit in Chinese. Their gramatical nature provokes many controversies in the circle of modern Chinese grammar, the focus of the which is the appraising issues ofwords and phrases caused by the nature of detachable words. A word is the smallest unit that can be used freely in a language. It has compact structure. The morphemes can be neither separated nor inverted. It is generally agreed that if a language unit can be extended by inserting some component, then it is a phrase, otherwise it is a word. However, Chinese words don't have fixed form marks that can be employed to appraise them, so it is hard to separate words and phrases clearly. When it comes to define detachable words grammatically, many problems arise. On the one hand, detachable words can be extended, and their composing morphemes can be separated or inverted, thus having the characteristic of phrases. On the other hand, detachable words have specific meanings semantically, and in structure they show characteristic of "objects inseparable from verbs, and verbs inseparable from objects", thus making them appear to be words. In this dissertation, the author summarizes definitions about the nature of detachable words in the circle of modern Chinese grammar in the first chapter. Then from the perspective of teaching Chinese as a second language, the author takes detachable words that are not separated or extended as words, while takes those that are separated and extended as phrases.It is the capability of being separated and combined that makes detachable words become a hard problem for foreign students in learning Chinese. Chinese and Korean are different language types, and have greatdifference in grammar, vocabulary and other aspects. Korean students have difficult in learning Chinese detachable words. In the second chapter the author analyzes the errors that occur when Korean students learn and use detachable words in order to find the causes of errors and guide the teaching strategies of learning detachable words in teachingChinese as a second language. In this chapter, it is clear that there are mainly two kinds of problems. One is that detachable words are treated as regular words, and thus errors occur. e.g., "帮忙我"(help me), "聊天起来" (start talking) , "游泳了一个小时" (swim for an hour) , "一考试 完就放假了" (the vocation will begin as soon as the examination finished) etc. Theother is that learners don't know how to separate and extend detachable words, and seldom use extensions of detachable words, that is the side of "separation"On the basis of the error analysis in chapter two, the author refersto the grammatical distinction between Chinese and Korean, and translates a lot of materials about detachable words in chapter three. On that basis, the author makes a comparison between Chinese detachable words and their Korean counterparts from the aspects of word meaning and part of speech, and sums up the translation rules into Korean of those inserted components when detachable words are separated and extended.There are two main reasons why many errors occur when Korean students are learning detachable words. For one thing, detachable words have so many complicated extended forms that it is hard to learn and use. For another, there are neither particular explanations for detachable words in teaching, nor related systematic exercises. Korean students don't know what detachable words are and how to extend them. In chapter four, the author makes a teaching design of detachable words, based on the detachable words' extension rules and their use in speech communication in chapter one, the errors shown by the error analysis in the use of detachable words in chapter two, and the rules attained from translations in chapter three, with reference to problems in the oral teaching materials of teaching Chinese as a second language in China and Korea. The author thinks that detachable words should be taken as a separate language point in teaching Chinese as a second language. Taking the complexity of their extension, it is not proper to teach detachable words as an independent unit. Therefore, the author claims that detachable words teaching should, first of all, make clear the definitions, grammatical features and range of detachable words, and then cutting the whole into pieces, connect their teaching with the teaching ofother language points. Thus the emphasis is put on the difference between detachable words and regular words. It is also suggested mat teachers make a regular summary of learned detachable words and make a relatively concentrated study of them. In this way, it is effective for foreign students to learn Chinese detachable words.
