Starting with the formation and development of the Chinese decorative art philosophy and probing into the development of its essence and characteristics, the author discusses the relationship between the Chinese decorative art tradition and the politics, economics and cultural philosophy of the society and illustrates the conditions of the Chinese decorative art in modern and contemporary times with an analysis of the national cultural psychology. The research follows the Marxist economics- philosophy and the aesthetics approach and covers fields in cultural anthropology, art studies and psychology. The major argument of the dissertation is that decorative art is the source and essence of the Chinese plastic arts tradition and its natural and harmonic philosophy and aesthetical pursuit plays a positive role in Chinese civilization development. The unique form and content of the Chinese decorative art helps greatly in enriching and developing human visual culture and experience. This is an era when China is establishing its own contemporary aesthetical field with the trend of globalization and the rapid development of China's economy. Chinese decorative art tradition under such new circumstances and with such significant contemporary cultural value will certainly have a great influence on objective natural environment, humanistic symbolism environment and, more importantly, the social system environment. The author further predicts the emergence of a neo-rationalism decorative art form which reflects the time.
