A Study Of Yao Xie

The research object of this dissertation is Yao Xie, who is a renowned poet and scholar of the modern time. He has many achievements in literature, being called a master in poetry writing and Ci poems creation, as well as one of famous experts in antithetical style creation in the late of Qing Dynasty. In academic research, he does as prominent as writing, particularly in the research of verse drama and novels. Synthesizing these aspects, the dissertation does a comprehensive research with an effort to try to breakthrough formerly studies existing disconnection phenomenon which regard Yao Xie either as a poet or as a scholar. The dissertation clearly describes biography and activities during all his life, using the research technique that makes comments according to people, on this foundation, makes reasonable explanation to his creation and the prominent characteristic of his scholarly research, then gives accurate appraisal, pointing out his important status in the history of classical literature and literary criticism in the ancient times.The dissertation consists of four chapters. Chapter â…  makes a detailed description and classification about his biography, fellowship, and writing through the consultation of all kinds of local chronicle, related collected works of his generation, his poetry, Ci poem, antithetical style creation and other materials, making his verse drama and Quyi (Chinese folk art forms) activities as one part of described priorities. Chapter â…¡, on the foundation of absorbing previous achievements, analyzes his theory and the practice from the mutual relations between individual poet and poet community, highlighting his insistence on expressing personality in writing and his endeavor of seeking to breakthrough the limitation of individual interest. Chapter â…¢ describes and analyzes content, origin, and compiles principal in Yao Xie's drama anthology "Works of Modern Yuefu Selected by Fuzhuang". In the aspect of the purpose of compilation, I think it includes the intention of popularizing celebrated drama of the editor's time; the compiles style, indicates his yearning for prosperity during the period of KangXi and QianLong Emperors. This Chapter also generalizes dramatic thoughts in " Modern Yuefu Textual research", analyzes the influence of the study of Confucian classics in the writings style; proves the sibling relations between "Works of Yuefu Selected by Fuzhuang" and "Modern Yuefu textual research", and makes arrangement between the two, concurrently discusses the Yao Xie's drama creation. Chapter IV generalizes the edition, origin and influence of Yao Xie's criticism on "Dreams of the Red Chamber", and his paying more attention to the sentiment subject and the authentic artistic character in his research, concurrently discussing Yao Xie's material works "The Essential Points of reading 'Dreams of the Red Chamber' ".
