This article takes the case of Monk Cyonen who came from Japan in song dynasty and discusses the significance of the exchange in Buddhism between China and Japan at the beginning of Song Dynasty. After reorganizing and interpreting the first-hand literature related to Cyonen, the author thinks that the three arguing points that Japanese researchers proposed is not convincing, and needs further discussion.This paper first proposes that the purpose of Japanese monks such as Cyonen coming to China is not only for personal touring, but also for pursuing the Buddhist doctrine for the country. Touring is just an excuse for pursuing Buddhist doctrine. Then it proposes that the monks' traveling to China is not only for their personal pursuit but also shoulder the responsibility of pursue Buddhism for their country; their coming worked as a political and cultural link between China and Japan. And , during the exchanging of Buddhism of China and Japan, it seems there is a phenomenon of some classical Buddhism works returning to china from Japan and some Japanese monks commentating on Chinese Buddhism works. This doesn't explain that the Japanese Buddhism research level had surpassed China, and the input-output relationship between China and Japan had reversed. The Buddhism doctrine still flows from east to west, and some Japanese monks such as Genxin still travels west for the Buddhism doctrine.This article researches in the following steps:First some literatures on Cyonen are introduced in the preface. The focus is on the researching results of Japanese academics both before and for the time being, and states the significance of the research of the monks such as Cyonen's traveling to China.The first chapter starts from the space dimension, and analyzes the political, cultural and the economic exchange relationships in East Asia which centers China when Cyonen came to China in Song Dynasty. It emphasizes the international influence of the cultural diplomacy and the Buddhism policy of Song Dynasty.The second chapter starts from the time dimension and analyzes the great function and status of Cyonen in the Japanese history of introducing Chinese Buddhism. The influence of various public opinions in the Japanese Buddhism circle on the monks' traveling for pursuing Buddhism is also studied.The third chapter criticizes the Japanese academics' view points of Cyonen's coming to China just for touring but not for pursuing of education in Buddhist doctrine.
