The rise of Italian opera seria in the eighteenth century is due to the requirement of society, politics and culture, to the spring up trends of thought of New-classical literature and thought of Arcadia, and to the go together of persons with ability of music and literature. Opera seria, rising in these situations, is characterised with serious polt, dignity historical material and arias which are the focus of music. The nature of opera seria is to expose the real tragedy of life. Opera seria is a kind of drama that is composed for music specially. The idea of opera seria determines the function of arias.The most important function of arias in opera seria is not to figure a role but to express emotion. There are three points of the style of aria, determined by this function, the first is that the human voice is the monopolization in arias, the second is that the decoration is equal to melody, the third is that the da capo form of aria is sublimation of sensibility. These characters reflected the idea of tragedy and emotion.The root reason, that the decline of opera seria and aria, is the embodiment of the losing of its social function.
