This dissertation is about the study of the history of Chinese modern music with the object: Dr. Wang Guangqi who has been considered as the founder of the Chinese Musicology. Mr. Wang was the founder of an important academic organization: the Chinese Youth Academy in Beijing during "Wu Si Period". He started his oversea career as a student in Germany since 1920. Then he changed his major to musicology in 1922. He passed away in Bonn in 1936. He had never ever come back to China during his 16-years stay in Europe. This dissertation is written with the methodology of association in order to find out the origin of his decision on starting his oversea studying career; the reason he changed major from economics to musicology; the relation between him and the school of Comparative Musicology in Berlin and all areas which are not completely researched for a long time (or have never been researched) such as: the relationship between him and the Sinologists in Germany and the details of his life and study in Germany. At the same time, this thesis also focused on studying, translating and analyzing all those Mr. Wang's writings in German.This dissertation is divided into two parts, the first part refers to his career in Germany which contains five chapters. It examines his life and affairs during those 17-year stay, first as a student and later on as a musicologist in Germany. Besides that, the first part also gives us the author's personal comprehension of various historical facts. Those five chapters are: the verification on the cause of his studying career in Germany; the study of his journey; the review of his life in Frankfurt, Berlin and Bonn respectively.The second part is the research of his writings in German. It shows the cause and effect of his sixteen articles clearly. All the articles are translated and analyzed completely including those not yet published in China. It also composes of 5 chapters.
