The banned book appears as a social phenomenon when the history of human beings developed into class society accompanied by a comparative increase in the number of books. It is a mandatory administrative decree enforced by the government to put a ban on such sectors as publishing, circulating and reading, etc. or actually on a certain sector. It not only reflects the then society, politics and culture but also the social economic phenomenon and technological development. So the banned book is a cultural phenomenon and a kind of political or economic one as well, which can be addressed as a comprehensive phenomenon.Song Dynasty is a key period in the history of Chinese banned books, when the policy, number and means of banned book have been improved compared with its predecessor respectively. The banned book in Song Dynasty inherits the traditions from the pre-Qin days, and at the same time is the forerunner of banned books in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty, which conveys to us the social status quo in Song Dynasty indirectly.This dissertation includes two parts: the comprehensive analysis and the case study.The first part intends to provide a detailed analysis of such three aspects as the stages, features and types of Song banned book and of the relationship between the book and society (including the relationship between the banned book and politics, the relationship between the banned book and culture and the relationship between...
