The Study Of Song Dynasty Books Format Design

The invention and use of woodblock printing is one of the greatest contributions that Chinese made to mankind. Song Dynasty is the most prosperous period for the development of woodblock printing, and especially during the Southern Song Dynasty woodblock printing reached its climax. A large number of copies of woodblock printing for its convenience took the place of real books and the format of book has greatly changed to adapt to the development of woodblock printing. In the Song Dynasty, the format of woodblock printing books basically fixed and it has been still used by now, which has a far-reaching influence on the modern design format of books. The Book layouts in the Song Dynasty are not only patterns that the ancients left us but also the combinations between the traditional culture and ancient design idea. To discover the beauty of the Song Dynasty books' format, this paper mainly focuses on the analysis of historical background, cultural factors and technical factors of the development of the Song Dynasty woodblock printing according to the study of the characters arrangement in books, graphic combination, layout, scale and proportion in the whole layout structure and visual orientation etc. Combined with analysis of current situation of the traditional culture and design ideas embodied in the Song Dynasty books format, this paper will analysis the development of modern format design, which aims to find the cultural connotation and the design thoughts of the Song Dynasty books' format and help more book designers to realize the Chinese unique cultural charm. Following the Modern trend of book designing and understanding what people really need, Book designers can create more book layouts which include more Chinese national characteristics. which is China's book layout design direction for future development.
