Etymology means the origins of the pronunciation and meaning of a single word and a cluster of homologous words. It belongs to the historical comparative linguistics.There are different etymologies in different languages. Chinese etymology mainly focuses on the origins of a single word and a cluster of homologous words. And Kam - Tai etymology is the broad - sense one that includes the origins of prefix, parts of speech, old loanword and the word marked by Chinese characters in addition to involve what Chinese one contains.Etymology is the foundation of lexicology, semantics, phonetics and grammar.
