Study of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners is an important component in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. This research conducts classification, grading and analysis of 76 characters under Yan(?) radical (including 33 basic characters, 19 intermediate characters, 17 advanced characters and 7 advanced Appendix characters) in The Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages and related words.This paper mainly consists of the following three aspects:First of all, we analyze the grading, distribution and ideographical characteristics of characters under YanC(?) radical in The Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages as well as the grading and distribution of words related to characters under Yan(?) radical. In accordance with the semanteme theory, the characters under Yan(?) radical can be divided into four major classes: speech event, language character, psychological state and other meaning. Among them, most are characters of speech event class, which can be further divided into the seven subclasses: speech & ask-and-answer, discussion & debate,education & test, censure & taunt, concealing & deception, notice & warning and others.Secondly, we discuss related strategies of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners for characters under Yan(?) radical in The Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages. In accordance with the introduction of characters under Yan(?) radical, we adopt various teaching strategies for different characters, such as teaching strategy of upgrading from the easier to the more advanced, teaching strategy based on meaning and teaching strategy through related words. In the teaching strategy of upgrading from the easier to the more advanced, we decide the difficulty of characters in accordance with their grading, and we conduct teaching in phases from basic characters to intermediate characters, advanced characters and advanced Appendix characters respectively; in the teaching strategy based on meaning,we classify the characters into one class based on their meanings, and conduct concentrated teaching for one class of characters; in the teaching strategy through related words, we summarize the meaning of words consisting of related characters, and learn characters based on understanding of words.Finally, by combining the research results and teaching strategies, we conduct teaching design for characters under Yan(?) radical in The Graded Chinese Syllables,Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages. In accordance with specific Chinese characters, we conduct graded teaching design, classified teaching design and design of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners for characters under Yan(?) radical. Based on that, we propose the following suggestions for design of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners: when teaching Chinese characters to foreigners, we can try adopting different teaching methods for different characters, have the awareness of grading and classification when teaching Chinese characters, and combine the teaching of words and characters. |
