The object to be investigated in this article is the formal feature of the contemporary poetry in China mainland during 1949-1989. The article first and foremost re-thinks the poetry sociological critical modes and their limitations, to point out that the poetry criticism has not entered the genuine multi-element utterance age over the forty years since the State establishment. Therefore, the proposal of introducing the theory of thing-in-itself into the poetry research is raised, i.e. to treat the poetry research as a research of literature science. Such a research way of concentrating attention on the"literary nature"of poetry will finally settle on the formal research of poetry. After having sorted out the Western formal research tradition starting from Pythagoras, the article pointed out the position difference between the Western and Oriental formal problems, and further raised the emancipating of the"form"out of the"content", so as to enable the"form"to set its own"form"necessity and feasibility. Finally, after having clarified the basic concepts of the"text","language","structure", etc. by drawing on the experience of the Western achievements got in formal criticism theory, the poetry formal research made by this article over the forty years since the State establishment is defined as the internal and external formal researches built on the basis of poetry language analysis.In Chapter I, this article, on the basis of briefly sorting out the development course of the odes and pointing out that they have their own formal tradition, emphatically analyzes the formal features of the odes during 1949-1957. In the early years after State establishment, the odes were mainly in the semi-free style and semi-metrical pattern, and presented a writing type drifting between the"red"and"white"and being mainly located in the red color; adopting the sentence structure mode adapted to the needs of the broad masses of workers and peasants as well as conforming to the modern Chinese language standard. In the analysis of the ode structural form, this article introduces the concept of narrative structure, with a view to trying to expose the self-sufficient inherent world through the research of the mutual relations between the narrators, scenes, figures, images and other formal elements. The narrators of the odes took the"people's"stand to narrate, the scene was the scene with the time features, and the"narrator-scene"relation was the new-type relation built on the negation-of-negation basis opposite to the traditional"myself-thing"relation; the act succession relation between"figure-figure"may be presented in the formula"X meeting with Y—Y influencing X—X establishing relation with Y"; and the image system might also be presented in the formula"'dawn, spring and...
