China and Japan are the close neighbor separated by a sea, the history of their cultural exchange being well-established. In ancient times, the cultural exchange between China and Japan is characteristic of Japan's acceptance of ancient Chinese culture. A Japanese scholar Dr. Naito vividly analogizes the inspiring function of ancient Chinese culture in the evolution of Japanese civilization as following: "Before the contact with Chinese culture, the Japanese civilization is like the soybean milk, and the Chinese culture is like the bittern; after the contact with Chinese culture, the Japanese civilization has turned into the bean curd immediately."The cultural exchange between China and Japan has been an important research area. Just as the various nationalities in the world, Japan has its unique culture. Under its special geographical environment of being an island country, the primitive Japanese created its inherent primitive culture, namely Jomoh Culture lasting for nearly 8000 years, which displays the features of its stability and endurance in Japanese culture as an island country. Simultaneously, Japanese culture has also displayed the features of its openness and accommodation, which is mainly reflected in its accepting ancient Chinese culture. In the later Jomoh period, with the initial contact of Chinese culture, Japanese adopted the manner of being positive and open to Chinese culture. They positively accepted the advanced Chinese culture, and created Yayoyi Culture on the basis of Jomoh Culture. Looking over the development history of Japanese culture, before the Meiji Reformation of accepting the western culture, each stage of Japanese culture comes under the influence of Chinese culture in the varying degree throughout its developing process.Both Chinese and Japanese scholars have made large number of researches concerning the great influence of Chinese culture on Japanese culture and have yielded great number of achievements. As to the use of research materials, Chinese historical records have been taken as the main evidence in most of the studies above. As to the research perspective, the focus has been mainly on the influence of Chinese culture on Japanese culture.
