In the history of the development of Neo-Confucianism developed during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), the ontological Schools of "li"(literal:laws of anything) and "xin" (literal: heart) with Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan (both being famous Chinese philosophers) as their representatives respectively, have played an important role. Generally speaking, the fact that the philosophy on exploring the universal laws or on esteeming ethics and character are made use of as the base of distinguishing the two philosophical Schools became the deep-rooted sign of the two schools' thoughts and then has exerted deep influence on other area including the field of Chinese literature. As for the current research on Zhu Xi has made great progress both in philosophy and in literature. However, the research on the Xiangshan (Lu Jiuyuan's another name) School represented by Lu Jiuyuan has only been concentrated on philosophy, (mainly focused on Lu Jiuyuan himself and seldom concerns his followers "four teachers of Yongshang" and "Huaitang disciples"), while literature was greatly ignored. Undoubtedly, such situation leaves an untouched field for current scholars. Nevertheless, because the literary thoughts of Xiangshan School have a close relationship with "xin" philosophy, it will be a thorny thing to investigate their literary thoughts and their writings completely. It will be safe to say that exploring their literary thoughts must explore their "xin" philosophy and only the research on their literary thoughts based on "xin" philosophy can possibly bring a correct and unbiased conclusion.
