Ye Chang-chi was a famous epigraphist and bibliographist from the later period of Qing Dynasty to the earlier period of Republic of China, whose Yushi,Binzhou shishi lu and Cangshu Jishi Shi are masterpieces in epigraphy and bibliography. Ye's Yuandulu Riji spanned 48 years,which contains the record of his own life and abundant material of history, epigraphy and bibliography. It is considered as one of four great diaries in the later period of Qing Dynasty because of its value in literature and history. Making use of the photolithoprints of Yuandulu Riji, this dissertation describes all the editions of Riji,and then compiles the material concerning Ye's life,study and works in Riji,which provides academic circle with trustable historical material. This dissertation also offers a new collection of Ye's achievements on epigraphy and bibliography by means of compiling the postscripts ,inscriptions,essays in Riji, his separate collection and other relevant books.This dissertation is divided into 5 chapters. The 1st chapter,Yuandulu Riji's Spreading and Editions, firstly describes the shape of Riji's manuscript. It is focused on showing the words in the pieces of paper inserted to the manuscript or in the margins that are omitted in the photolithoprints. The original words altered by transcribers later are also described. Yuandulu Rijichao, which is based on Yuandulu Riji, is often considered as complete edition of Yuandulu Riji,but in fact the two ones are very different and have been compared in this chapter. The 2nd chapter. Ye Chang-chi's Biographical Material in Yuandulu Riji has solved the problem in which year Ye bore and died on the base of Riji so that the prevailing wrong opinion about this problem will be corrected. In addition, Ye's styles and literary names are collected from every kinds of literature so that those who will refer to Ye's works will be helped.Also,the relation between Ye's life and his works is shown by introducing several kinds of people who are close with Ye. Material about Ye's association with booksellers and bookshops,mostly in Beijing,perhaps can offer new information on the history of publishing. The 3rd chapter,The Material on Ye Chang-chi's Works in Yuandulu Riji, introduces the process of Ye's writing his works mentioned in Riji. Ye's thoughts on collation and his devotion to the study of ancient literature are properly described and evaluated. The 4th chapter, Ye Chang-chi's Compilation of Documents in Yuandulu Riji, lays emphasis on collecting the textological material of the scholars before or at the same time of Ye,transcribed into Riji by Ye. Of course,simple analyses are made. Readers can know Ye's academic experience. The 5th chapter, On Yuandulu's Collection of Books, compiles Ye's reading notes from the postscripts,inscriptions and essays in many books by referring to WubaiJingchuangguan Cangshu Mulu so as to provide trustable material for the study of Ye and the history of academy in the later period of Qing Dynasty. There were too many scholars associationg with Ye in Riji for this dissertation to introduce in the text,so Ye's chronological table is appended in the last to supplement the text.Yuandulu Riji is a treasure of ancient literature. There is abundant material about historic events,geographical features and customs everywhere. This dissertation lays emphasis on analyzing Ye's main works mentioned in Riji and collecting bibliographic material from Riji, and then gets a conclusion about Ye's devotion to the study of antient literature. Riji's value in other fields such as history is not covered.
