A nominalized phrase is the nominalization of a verb phrase. Nominalization exists not only in such Indo-European languages as English and German, but also a main characteristics of all Altaic languages, including Uyghur. In old traditional grammar books of Uyghur, nominalized phrases were studied as a form of verbal substantive forms. But the description of these books were inadequate and no fresh results. They only stuck to classification and forming process of Gerunds. Furthermore, in traditional grammar books, nominalized phrases were discussed as a transitional form of verbs and were defined that they not only partly kept basic semantic meaning and syntactic properties of verbs, but also had some grammatical meaning and grammatical forms of nouns. As a result, there occurred some false descriptions of such a phenomenon.This paper takes nominalizations in Uyghur as the main topic, and describes them comprehensively, systematically, and analyses and explains the structure and feature of nominalized phrases in Uyghur in the frame of generative syntax, and exposes the feature of such a cross-lingual phenomenon.This paper consists of five parts: preface, the types and tasks of nominalizers, the grammatical property of nominalized phrases, the function of nominalized phrase, and the conclusion.Part one mainly discusses the chosen topic of this paper, the meaning and value of such a study, the methods applied in this paper and relevant studies by other scholars.Part two mainly discusses the types and tasks of nominalizers. It includes the definition of nominalized phrases in Uyghur, nominalized phrases and verb-derived nouns, and the tasks of nominalizers.Part three discusses the syntactic feature of nominalized phrases, including their merging with such functional categories as possessors, cases and postpositions.Part four discusses the grammatical function of nominalized phrases. This part includes tense phrase, empty category in nominalized phrase, the functions of nominalized phrases as being a specifier, a predicative and a modifier.Part five is the conclusion of this paper. It includes the problems which have been solved and need to be solved.
