In the international community of music, music technology is a new sub-discipline within the music field. It comes out gradually from those disciplines such as electronics music and computer music etc, along with the historical development of modem science and technology.Based on the practices of development in music technology in China and West coutries, its main research contents and objectives are to make use of modern science and technology with electronics and computer technology as the core, and to explore the way and strategy for integrating of them with various practices of music including creation, perform, production, communication, education, research and so on in order to promote the further development of music. From this viewpoint, music technology has the nature of a crossing and integrating discipline.Music technology was born in the mid of the twentieth-century. After the development of several decades it gradually became a relatively independent discipline that contains many professional subdisciplines such as fundamental study of music technology, creation of electronics music, creation of multimedia music, digital audio processing and so on. The birth of these subdisciplines have promoted the recent development of various practical areas of music, and made a great contribution to meeting the social needs for training of professional personnal that have integrating capacity of both music and technology in this field. In recent years, some music institutions for advanced study in China have set up several professional courses related to music technology. However, generally speaking, development of music technology as an independent discipline and professional curriculum is still far behind the needs from the practice of music art, music industry and music education in China.This thesis is focused on the developments of music technology as a discipline and the professional courses both in China and abroad. It maily includes:defining of music technology as a discipline, analyzing its nature and functions in the musicology system;analyzing of practical needs and demands for the development of music technology in a new historical context, from the practices of music creations, perform, production, communication, education, and research etc.;studying of history and current status of the development of music technology as a discipline and professional curriculum in China and abroad;rethinking and commenting of construction of music technology in theoretical framework and professional curriculum in China from consideration of a new historical context.The structure of the thesis is as follows:Chapter 1 mainly elaborates the definition, contents and nature of music technology as a discipline.Chapters 2 and 3 mainly examine the development of history and current status of music technology in China and abroad ; Chapters 4 and 5 analyze and elaborate the development of theoretical research and professional courses of music technology overseas respectively,Chapter 6 mainly summarizes the historical development of music technology in China in past two decades;Chapter 7 proposes recommendations on the construction of music technology as a discipline and the professional curriculum in ChinaThe end is a brief summary of the thesis with an analysis of its innovation and weakness. Then the perspectives in the future for music technology will be described.
