From The Center To The Edge

This thesis discussed the old city of Shanghai in 1843-1914 year, which had experienced great change in economic and society after the city opened to the outside .Before the opening, the political, economic center of Shanghai city was at the Chinese city and Nan Tao . but after that , because of the foreign settlement opening up , the development of city has broken away from original orbit, the foreign settlement rose promptly during the rebellion of the Little-Sword society (Xiaodao hui qiyi) and the Taiping , and became the symbol of entire city at least in 1870s,. In this process , because of steamer springing up , sand ship declining , and programming foreign ship anchors district, the port area of the city transferred from the southeast to the northeast . This change aroused the foreign trading as well as the banking in foreign settlement which offered financial service for this kind of trading .In addition of the economic center moving to the north , after 1870s, the life facus of people has also focused at the foreign settlement . Under the stiff competition of foreign settlement , until the beginning of 20 century, the formerly prosperous old city had become being dependency on the foreign settlement , and had occurred great change in its image and functions. For instance, in commercial trade , The foreign settlement market became the transfer land of import and export merchandise, its inner land covered the coastal port from south to north and the valley of the Yangtze River ; but the Nan Tao market can only radiate suburb district and party of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, the goods in the old city was mainly Chinese traditional merchandise , Importer article was only in low files , the Consumer was local resident and suburb peasant . In 20 century , the image of the old city changed from " river sea coherent saliva, southeast metropolis " to typical Chinese city. People went to here , what they played in was that city god temple with Chinese feature, consuming the merchandise with cheap price that had Chinese traditional feature , what awaken was the recollections of people for ancient China.In the process of the old city moving to the edge of the whole city , stimulated by the foreign settlement , different aspects had adopted various measure, such as city order management, public sanitary management and traffic management , trying hard to change the appearance of this area , that made great change in measure and concept which had followed many years . In the aspect of city management of public order , the old city had established policeman in the beginning of 1898. Policeman replaced Xunfangbaojia department was the transformation of management measure from punishing after being engage to guarding in advance.At the same time, in the rapidly changing process of the old city in 20 century, because of coming from the West, different from the city life in our country , these measure and concept had caused intense social conflict . the city eyed the conflict between the policeman and the resident every day . Besides, the official and entry was also faced with how to adjust their role in new city life .In this kind of social changing, it was hand to avoid the benefit damage to some groups.
