This paper is a specific research on the variant font of Phagspa script. Not onlyhas Tibetan called horyig-Mongol character and seen as an art of Tibetan character,but also taught it as a script curriculum in some of the temples. Many of the characterswith the font appeared on couplets, tablets, official or personal seals. The contents ofthe couplets and tablets are various. Some are prose, poems or blessing, some are thename honors of those Buddhism leaders or some important temple managers. Thispaper mainly studies the origin of the font and its social-historical reasons, theliterature with the font from the character studies and the spelling methodology, andalso studies the alphabets' number and their variant forms to provide some conditionsfor making out the international standard code of Phagspa script.This paper is made up of five chapters as follows:The introduction states briefly the meaning of this research, the research methodand the past studies on this topic. Chapter one discusses the problems of the font,mainly studies the names, the proposed time and the spelling stylistics. Chapter twostudies Tibetan and Mongolian literature written with the font, including the materialarrangement, translation and transliteration, the spelling characteristics and principles,the related temples. Chapter three discusses the problems of human names and placenames written by Tibetan script in the Phagspa-Mongolian literatures. Chapter fourstates some problems of the standard code related to the font. The brief states ofPhagspa script and Phagspa standard code are introduced and the special and complexproperties of the code for Phagspa variant font are discussed in detail. This chapteralso puts out the general alphabet, the names, the transliteration alphabet and thefrequencies. The appendix includes all the references and the explanations of wholevocabulary in this paper.
