As an expression in images of people's life style, history, culture, and feeling, the visual arts record the history of eyes evolution and progress of artistic technique. It is important for the study of visual art history to interpret what, how and how to express the world which we have seen. This thesis which is based on the Chinese local art resources is a study about the ethnicity of Uygur visual art in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The author wants to furnish an original and local case to promote the study of Chinese integrated art history and the modernization of Chinese traditional art.Based on the anthropology study and field works which we have done, the thesis promoted that the visual art ethnicity is a natural expression or showing of people' ethnical identity. Ethnic group has characteristics in art view, aesthetics criterion, practice customs, visual express which are different form others'. It is because of the ethnical characteristic of art, the art of any ethnic group will maintain independence and be confidential to transform the art from outsiders, thus it have open mind about culture exchange.The grounds of argument are the typical Uygur visual arts, such as rock art, frescoes, sculpture, architectural design and ornaments, decorative pattern on the daily use, dance and so on. It is promoted that art ethnical characteristic will be clear and distinct when Uygur had got its own ethnic identity. Because of the obvious changes in life style, religion and taboo in the past, there are so many differentials between pre-Islamic and Islamic visual art. However there are some consistent in language, characters, life style, view of sacred and secular because the Uygur always has its own ethnic identity.The thesis analyzed the image system and visual characteristic of Uygur art and made its conclusion. The first, there is a close relationship between the religion and Uygur art. It is the religion taboo decided whether the image of human could be showed or not. And the Uygur has some kind of religion complex because of their life which always full of difficulties and the hard living condition in Xinjiang. The second, Uygur visual art shows the aesthetics characteristic which we called visual display, and this kind of characteristic is very different from Chinese classics art. The local artists transformed different art styles which come from Persian, Arab countries and so on, and displayed a blending visual characteristic using clear, bright, meticulous plant and abstract decorative patterns. Uygur could show their open mind and magnanimity, optimism and enthusiasm by this kind of visual art.Scholars have discussing about economy globalization, power politics and racial discrimination from 20th century and they pay attention to how the small and weak nations in today's world can be independence and act on their own. The thesis indicated that the study on theory modernization and culture communication would be more meaningful and effective when we take the special historic and cultural circumstances into account, and this is the very intention of this Uygur case study.
