On Missionaries' Publication Of Modern China (1807-1911)

In the thesis,we adopted the research method of "Clearing concept and returning theme".The thesis can be divided into 6 chapters.Chapter 1:To explain the meaning of "publishing" from both source and use of its content.According to the analysis of the concept of the publication we know "Publication" in Europe means copy works and issued to the public.In China,the meaning of "Publication" includes not only the distribution to the public for copying but also copying a single works.The word "work" here in the history we means books,later,Journals has also become a major publishing works.Newspapers,in its initial stage,the Publication are a part of the Study of the publishing History.Before the invention of printing,"copying" is mainly hand-sheets,and then,o mainly printing.Therefore,from the definition of the concept of the publication this paper means publishing history is the history of the printing and distribution newspapers and periodicals.So the research of publishing history should be started closely around this theme.In Modern China publication gone a development from traditional to modern,the Chinese traditional printing and publication is the fundamental of development,and is the background of understanding modern publishing.Chapter 2:we try to make a brief analysis of the traditional Chinese traditional printing and publishing features.A major feature of Chinese traditional printing is mainly in engraved printing.Two prominent characteristics of the traditional publication is the breadth of publication and the purpose of the non-profit publishing,the technical characteristics of the engrave printing and traditional publishing are closely linked.The introduction of modern printing technology is a key link of development in modern Chinese publication.Chapter 3 tells us:The development of Chinese movable type is mainly carried out by the missionaries,but primarily and practically applied in the printing and publishing activities of missionaries.After three stages of continuous improvement and perfection,missionaries have basically resolved how to make Chinese movable type,but also invented a quick word practical methods seized Chinese typesetting,for the Chinese printing using Modern Western movable type print they solved the most fundamental and crucial technical problems,and then formed a relatively mature Chinese print technology.Chapter 4&5:We describe the publication on missionaries,mainly in missionaries' publishers and publications.In Chinese modern history,the "missionaries" is a rich and tension content.The "missionaries published" which this paper concerns strictly limited in its publishing activities:This article is from the professional publishing history,the history of industry perspective to the publication of the missionaries,in an attempt to make a complete description for missionaries' publication itself.Chapter 6:we try to describe the characteristics and contributions of the missionaries' publication.In this thesis,we are according to professional trade of the history of the publication or industry to analyze and understand the characteristics of the missionaries' publication,as well as the contribution of missionaries' publication to the transformation of Chinese modern publication.In this thesis we seek to make a basic understanding and grasp for missionary publication as a part of the history of Chinese modern publication.
