The Golden Notebook is a courageous trial of writing that reflects the British female writer Doris Lessing's exploration and speculation of the contemporary social life and her faith in life, literature as well as the aesthetic forms. This novel, based on a dual-clue structure, employs at the same time a traditional and an innovative new form of narration, which not only determines the overall framework and the structural layout of this novel, but also reflects, by way of such an heterogeneous, anti-traditional narrative style, the author's critical understanding of the traditional mode of narration and the exploration of the form of modern fictions.Lessing's consideration about forms extends to the way she deals with time in the work. In The Golden Notebook, the traditional concept of time and expression are mixed with the modernistic concepts of psychological time and narration, which make this work take on a variety of artistic styles, providing a richer and broader expression for the heroine's mental development. The way in dealing with space in The Golden Notebook demonstrates the artistic effects of "alienation" and "convergence" which form a kind of artistic tension. Discontinuity and disorder of space in this work not only reflect the fragmented real world and the characters' anxiety, but also contribute to the formation of open layout. In addition, the recurring spaces have certain symbolic meaning .They are related to the characters and their mental state, and enrich the significance of the novel at a deeper level. The author employs various artistic skills in narration, such as the juxtaposition of two narrative voices, the switch of experience perspective, the collage of heterogeneous styles and the description of irrational mentalities, all of which reflect, while imposing a tinge of self-reflectivity on the text, the writer's consideration on the development of contemporary novels and her unique understanding of non-rational awareness, making this work differ drastically from the traditional novels in terms of artistic style."Body" is a repeated metaphorical image in The Golden Notebook. Lessing is good at using metaphors to mirror psychological difficulties by describing physical characteristics and feelings of men and women in a psychological crisis.. This is essential in showing the anxiety of the characters, their spiritual estrangement from each other, and in revealing the real cause of psychological difficulties. As a highly integrated work of art, The Golden Notebook involves various artistic skills, delicate frame settings, together with clever arrangements of the layout. All these elements are closely related to the content of expression by the author, and perfectly reflect the value of this work. It is the exploration of the links between the art form and ideological content of the work and the seeking of significance through forms that show the purpose of this dissertation.
