The Warring States period is a period of significant changes with great progress in many fields such as economy, society, politics, military affairs, and so on. And the culture was unprecedented prosperous. It is also an important period of great division and development in Chinese languages and characters. The independent administrative of the seigneurs had inevitably affected the development of characters, causing the regional differentiation of characters. Meanwhile, the character in some region had inner unanimity because of the connections among the regional, economic, political, cultural factors etc. In the states, which could come into being one writing system. Characters of different systems usually affected each other. During this period, the using of character also appeared numerous and complicated. One character could express several different words while one word could be expressed by several different characters. These phenomena had existed both in one regional character system and different regional character systems, in which the difference using of characters among different character systems is the most characteristic.In recent decades, the research about characters of the Warring States period has developed widely. With large quantities of materials being sorted out and published, prominent achievement on textual researching and interpreting of characters obtained, and the compilations of various kinds of character dictionaries, the research on the using of characters in the Warring States period is getting convenient. Some scholarships had a conclusion with illustration according to the textual excavation that the using of characters in the Warring States period was limited by the territory. However, it is not enough researched on the whole, and the achievement is not highly valued either. Based on the reality of character using of various systems in the Warring States period, we give comprehensive description and interpretation on 'the difference of character using of various systems in the Warring States period'. We also studied further on several related questions, such as 'the different forms of characters in the Warring States period', 'the policy of Qin to unify the writing system'.In the introduction, we give detailed explanation to the important concepts, the present achievements, the purpose and the significance, the material and the methods of the research.In chapter 1, we have given comprehensive investigation on 'the difference of character using of various systems in the Warring States period'. Based on this investigation, it is concluded that 'the difference of character using of various systems in the Warring States period' is as important as 'the different forms of characters'. Both of them should be considered as the important content of 'different forms of characters'. The different using of character among various regional systems is one of the reasons causing the regional difference of character systems, and it should be also the basis and standard to divide the characters into regional systems in the Warring States period.The research on 'the difference of character using of various systems in the Warring States period' is significant for us to understand 'the unifying of the writing system'. And chapter 2 and 3 discusses it in detail. In 'the policy of Qin to unify the writing system', it sorts out the characters in Qin in the first place. It is said in the preface of Shuo Wen that great seal script changed into small seal script by omission and alteration. In fact, Lisi and some other researchers' omission and alteration on the characters in Qin is a complete and unified sorting out along the natural tendency of the characters' own development. It is reflected by the structural changing of the graphic shapes in Qin since the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States period as well as the changing of the character using during this period. Another important aspect of 'unifying the writing system' in Qin was to abolish the paleography of the hexa-states, which consists of the regional variant graphes in the Warring States period and the different using of characters in Qin. The using of characters is basically coherent in Western Han Dynasty. 'The using of characters of the hexa-states different from Qin' numerously disappeared during Qin and the prior period of Western Han Dynasty, which means that 'the policy to unify the writing system' did actually unify the using of characters and brought notable results.
