Han, Wei and the Six Dynasties period was a turning point in the development and changes in Chinese period, the language is undergoing a transition process from Primitive Age to the Mediaeval Age of China. As an important document of that period, "Houhanshu" was rich and extensive in content, and contains a lot of characteristics information of Chinese, reflecting the Han, Wei and the Six Dynasties vocabulary. We choose the Kernel Word as an entry point to study "Houhanshu", to summarize the vocabulary of "Houhanshu" from the viewpoint of the Kernel Word, as well as the trends of medieval Chinese vocabulary. We analysis the 100 kernel words in "Houhanshu" based on Swadesh's "Hundred Words List", using semantic scene theory, supplemented with concurrent and diachronic analysis, statistical analysis and computer-assisted research methods. Through exhaustive search and basic analysis, we compiled the early forms of the same concepts, depicted the evolution of their semantics, pragmatics, grammar, etc. and made the corresponding interpretation. The study has greatly enriches the medieval Chinese vocabulary research and provides a new idea for thematic studies of Kernel Word, as well as a new reference.The full text of 270,000 words, consists of eight chapters.The first chapter is the Overview, which has given a comprehensive introduction to the Kernel Word research situation, described the "Houhanshu" vocabulary study outline, research significance, research materials and research methods.The second chapter to the seventh chapter have studied the pronoun, the adverb, the numeral, the noun, the verb, the adjective of the Kernel Word in "Houhanshu" separately. Nouns and verbs account for the vast majority of this part. We divide nouns into five broad categories: biological category term, an integral part of organisms, natural phenomena, material terms and color words. While verbs includes dietary behavior, cognitive behavior, movement and daily rest and others.The last chapter is conclusion and has summarized the characteristics and situation of the Kernel Word in "Houhanshu". Researches have shown that the Kernel Word in "Houhanshu" still reflect a small semantic partition despite simplification in the structure of semantic field. The representative words changed in various speeds and modes. The members of the same semantic field often appeared jointly and the relationship between semantic fields is close. At the same time, this part also points out the innovation point, the shortcomings and direction for further research.Following are the main innovation pointes in this article:(1) It is the first time to carry out research of "Houhanshu" from the "Kernel Word" perspective using "Hundred Words List", which enriches the "Houhanshu" vocabulary research, and provides a new idea for thematic studies of the Kernel Word.(2) Describes the Kernel Word in "Houhanshu" in a relatively exhaustive analysis, makes classification and illustration covering part of speech, semantics, characteristics differences, etc. and first outlines the outlook of the Kernel Word in "Houhanshu".(3) Targeted to certain kernel words such as "feather", "moon", "belly", "bite" and so on, carries out diachronic exploration, reveals their delivery evolutions, enriches the existing research results.(4) We put forward some new ideas, such as: About the kernel word "tree", Whether "Mu" has the tendency to refer to the tall trees in terms of "Shu" and "Mu"; About the word "sun", we analyze the reason why "Taiyang" has been used until now, but "Daming" which has the same way of construction with "Taiyang" has disappeared for a long time;About the kernel word "swim", we think that "You" is not the same with "Youyong", and takes"swim" as an obvious kernel word which has dual characters in historic and etymologic significance; About the kernel word "sit", though refers to a posture that differes in ancient time and modern days, did not change the meaning of itself, but changes in semantic field. These new ideas may show some problems.
