The dissertation describes the figures of speech in the long bronzeinscriptions of Xi Zhou Dynasty.Including the introduction and the epilogue,itfalls into 10 parts,about 270,000 characters altogether.Based on 1) the macroscopical understanding of the history of Chinesefigures of speech,2) sorting out the figures of speech used in Chinesedocumentation before the Qin Dynasty and 3) the former study of the figures ofspeech in Xi Zhou bronze inscriptions,the dissertation does a thorough andsystematical description of the figures of speech used in the long bronzeinscriptions,which are longer than 50 characters and excavated before 1990's,and finds about 50 kinds of figures of speech.According to the relationshipbetween the kinds of figures of speech,we divide them into seven categories:figures of speech for words and passages,figures of speech for conciseness,figures of speech for repetition,figures of speech for intricacy and orderlineness,figures of speech for scene recurrence,figures of speech for inserted explanationand figures of speech for personal titles.The thorough description of the figures of speech in the lone bronzeinscriptions of Xi Zhou Dynasty will help deepen the study of the history ofChinese figures of speech,and help research the thinking habit and expressionmode of Chinese people.At the same time,the practice can also contribute to thetextual research and explanation of the old documentation.Because it has beenthe common sense of the scholars that the sorting out of the figures of speech inthe old Chinese written language is helpful to reading the ancient books.So thedissertation displays some review and re-thinking about several passages ofinscription.And that is Chapter Eight"Reviews of some readings of Xi Zhoubronze inscriptions in the perspective of figures of speech"...
