Resources And Images Of China In The Contemporary American Film

In this paper I discuss the subjects,resources and images of China in the contemporary American film.Several topics are included.Firstly,use of China resources in American film.Chinese stories,film stars and sceneries are widely used in contemporary American film for Hollywood's business interest.However they only represent the value of west world even if it's the face of China factors that are shown,Secondly,the images of China in traditional and contemporary American film are discussed.There are some stereotypes of China such as Fu Manchu,Daughter of the Dragon, Charlie Chan,Mrs.Butterfly,the Ancient Kingdom and the World to Be Saved are repeated again and again.Even in form of Kongfu,with the box office purpose,there are still those stereotypes of China repeated in contemporary American film.In fact,it won't be easy to change these stereotypes by consideration of box office and ideology.Thirdly,The mystery ancient Orient,abnormality heroes,kongfu bad guys are the main images of China in joint Chinese-American film.They simply copy the stereotypes of China in "pure" American film.Chinese people understand these images in different way.Also these images of China are shown even in film by Chinese and falls in the situation of self-orientalization for the purpose of overseas box office.The image of a country represents the softpower.Hollywood stereotypes of China have been spreading all over the world by American films for a long time,whereas Chinese film was absent.Chinese film should go to international film market to improve the image of China.
