The purpose of the present study was to explore the evolution of Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting style since the 1950s in order to determine the changes that traditional Chinese fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting style evolved in Taiwan. The study started from the year of 1949 when the Kuomintang government moved to Taiwan which ended the era of Japanese rule. Starting in the Ming and Ching dynasties, many Han people immigrated to Taiwan and this changed Taiwan's painting styles from literati painting to Min custom. During Japanese rule, and although the Japanese made great efforts to promote the Toyoga painting style, Taiwan's local mixed art style and ideology began. After the 1950s and 1960s, the impact of occidentalization, primarily American influence, started to shape a new art development in Taiwan.Studies on documents and art work were employed for the subject of this study. Through interviews and dictation records, which were acquired from both the years of 1950s and 1960s, and using paintings as a reference, this method is able to show the changes of Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting style before and after the year of 1949. By doing so, the trend and conditions of Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting style can be defined.The research findings revealed that art activities are not only to express the creators own life experience and talent, but also to represent and reflect the aesthetics of that time, Looking at the changes in Taiwan's history and the integration of mainstream as well as non-mainstream cultures, Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting style conveys various messages of that time and enriches fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting style.This thesis will examine the transformation of the characteristics of the Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting since the 1950s by analyzing the following five points:1. The starting point of modern Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting concept which includes: Three Masters from across the strait, The Painting of Royal Style in Song Dynasty, and the Glue Color Painting/Gouache.2. The painting method of Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting evolves from the traditional meticulousness to the sketch techniques. 3. Taiwan's nearly one hundred year history and the integration with the modern Western ideology4. The content, which gradually possessed local context of Taiwan's development.5. Influences of the contemporary trend from Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird paintingIn conclusion, the changes of Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting style were shaped by people's life experiences at all times. These kinds of life memories basically include the feelings towards histories and the impacts from a culture shock and merger. In the recent 30 years, the modern concept of Taiwan's Fine Brushwork Flower-and-Bird Paintings has been conveying and establishing the spirit of the traditional Chinese Painting of Royal Style in Song Dynasty through the unobtrusive and imperceptible change and influence processes. Although this transformation and integration are not significant, step by step, the results of transformation and the integration can be prominent and brilliant.In the early twenty-first century, if the development of Taiwan's culture is to be solid, depends on whether the society is able to display its style in a more caring, compatible, and multi-style way in order to have the power to convey its oriental traditional culture locally. The modernization of Taiwan's fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting has to begin its evolvement from tradition, and then confirm as well as establish the value of local culture; therefore, by doing so, it will also provide various elements into Taiwan's traditional fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting in order to let this type of painting change with each passing day and possess more vitality.
