| FeiAn Yu plays a decisive role in modern Chinese painting history, his learning experience and the skills, as well as the painting style have the significant influence to the various aspects of contemporary Chinese fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting. FeiAn Yu, along with Zhifou Chen, addressed with a well-known reputation,"the figure with the surname of’Chen’in south and another with ’Yu’ in north", are respectively considered as the representatives of modern fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting in the south and north China.Born in a literary family, FeiAn Yu is a "typical old Chinese celebrity" with the elegant manner and in good taste. As the representative of the "Peking traditional school" in the period of the Republic of China, he was able to endure the loneliness, withstand the pressure, adhere to tradition, and in the aspect of modern Chinese realistic painting, he assiduously inherited the characteristics of the fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting, which handed down from the Song Dynasty. Before him, traditional Chinese fine brushwork flower-and-bird paintings were neglected by artists, which tended to be on the verge of the art of traditional Chinese painting. Thanks to the concerted efforts of his fellow and him, this traditional craft regained the attention of people, and its dazzling splendor was coruscated as well. All what he’d done had laid the cornerstone of the development of modern flower-and-bird painting.Adopted the literature and the case analysis, the paper introduced FeiAn Yu’s lifetime, art education and artistic contribution; studied his painting style and performance techniques; compared the characteristics of his painting with the other contemporary artists’; and expounded his painting artistic achievements, as well as the influence to the later generations. Furthermore, the author also dwelled on FeiAn Yu’s art historical status and his effect to the modern and contemporary Chinese fine brushwork flower-and-bird painting. |
