"Dragon-carving And The Literary Mind" And The Theory And Creation Of Antithetic Verse

This paper consists of 4 chapters. It introduced and analyzed the remarkable achievement of the book "Dragon-carving and the Literary Mind " in the realm of the theory and creation of antithetic verse, and further explored the special position and profounding influence of the book upon Chinese literary history.Chapter 1 (Introduction) has two sections. It introduced and analyzed the general conditions of antithetic verse creation and theoretical criticism both prior to the book and during Liu Xie (author of the book)'s time of Qi and Liang's periods, which revealed the phenomenon of irrelevance between antithetic verse creation and theoretical criticism and showed the book's special value in theoretical criticism of antithetic verse.Chapter 2 has 8 sections. After pointing out the relation between the book and theoretical criticism of antithetic verse, and introducing the theory of antithetic verse formation and the theory of antithetic process, this chapter mainly introduced and expounded the concrete content concerning the theoretical criticism of antithetic verse from the following five aspects: antithesis, literary quotation, sound and meter, embellishements, integration of antithetic verse and prose, which proved Liu Xie as the founder of Chinese literary criticism of antithetic verse.Chapter 3 also has 8 sections. Beginning from the five aspects mentioned above, and also the discussing methods and writing styles, it introduced and expounded the remarkable achievement of the book in antithetic verse creation, and basing on the concrete analysis of the basic feature of the book as antithetic style, it differentiated and analyzed the right and wrong of the book and put right some false conceptions which had existed for over hundreds of years.Chapter 4 has 2 sections. It mainly discussed the special position and far reaching influence of the book in China's antithetic verse history, showing Liu Xie not only as the founder of Chinese theoretical criticism of antithetic verse, but also the great master of the writing style since Wei and Jin dynasties.Based on the analysis above, this paper concluded that(1)Liu Xie was not only good at literary criticism but also good at literary creation;(2)Liu Xie was not only an outstanding theoretician but also an outstanding practitioner;(3)The book was not only the foremost work in the theoretical criticism of antithetic verse, but also the masterpiece among antithetic works.
