Liang Zongdai emerged as a well acknowledged poet during the "May 4th Movement" period, who has achieved greatly both in translation and in poetics. But for a long time after the liberation, he had been mostly ignored by the literary field and it was not until the 1980s that his poems, his contribution to translation and his poetical theory and criticism were brought under the spotlight again.This dissertation aims to provide a deep and thorough perspective of Liang Zongdai by a systematic study of his great achievement in poem writing, in poetic theory and comparative poetics, and in literary criticism. Liang's poem is a natural flow from his heart and blends well with his ideology. Tracing the poet's foot steps, analyzing his cultural personality and writing motives, we search for the roots of his poetical theory. Placing Liang's poetics in the context of the modern poetics in China, and applying the influence study, we explain the sources of his poetics and his contribution to modern poetics in China. Comparative poetics, philosophy and cultural study provide us with means to illustrate Liang's symbolic poetics which is a good blend of the east and west ideology and has much modernism and foresight and point to Liang's transitional significance to China's symbolic poetics. Context analysis is used to show Liang's personal characteristics in poetic criticism. Last, but not least, we touch upon the great influence of his translation on his poetics. |
