Study Of Deng Yun Jing Yao

Dengyun Jingyao is a complete rhyme table written by Jia Cunren from Hedong (now Fushan, Shanxi) during the reign of Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. It is the only book we can find at present on Historical Chinese Equiprosody by the scholar from Shanxi in the Qing Dynasty. The phonetic character in it is influenced by Jia's dialect (now the dialect in Fenhe River section). The research of Dengyun Jingyao not only provides indispensable reference to the phonetic diachronic development of the dialect in Fenhe River section, but also has some academic value for the research of the phonetic diachronic development of Chinese.Via synchronic study and compare method, historical connection method, inner-analyzing method, literature-researching method, calculating and statistical method, strict phoneme analyzing method, etc., this thesis analyzed Dengyun Jingyao from the four aspects of initials, final sounds, tones and Jia's historical chinese phonological view. By comparison and contrast between Dengyun Jingyao and related rhyme books, Dengyun Jingyao and the diachronic sounds of the dialect in Fenhe River section, we elaborated the phonetic characters in Dengyun Jingyao and Jia's phonological view, clarified the nature of Dengyun Jingyao comprehensively and precisely. There are seven parts in this thesis.Chapter One. Introduction. It mainly introduces the purpose and significance of the research of Dengyun Jingyao, and commentates the current researches of this book.Chapter Two. The explanation of the view about the rhythm of Dengyun Jingyao. There are two aspects:the investigation of Jia Cunren's hometown and life through the related historical literature left; the introduction to the compilation style and versions of Dengyun Jingyao, and the elaboration of the many phonological views discussed in the book.Chapter Three. The initial system of Dengyun Jingyao. It mainly introduces the initials in Dengyun Jingyao, compares and contrasts the initial system in it and those in other contemporary Mandarin rhyme books, and analyzes the devoicing of voiced initials, the combination of Zhi and Zhao groups, the combination of Ying and Yu, the remains of Yi and Wei, the palatalization of plain sibilants and velars, the combination of light labials and the combination of Ni and Niang, and the pronunciation of Ri.Chapter Four. The final sound system of Dengyun Jingyao. It analyzes thoroughly the distribution of the final sounds in the book, and reconstructs the phoneme system of the final sounds in it through Mr. Xue Fengsheng's phonemic theory. It mainly discusses the problems of the final sound system in this book, like the labial words appearing twice, words from grade 3 of Ma final sound appearing twice, homonymous phenomena of Youhou labials and Yumu final sound, and the media of velars and laryngeals in grade 2 KaiKou group.Chapter five. The tonal system of Dengyun Jingyao. In this chapter, we analyzed and discussed the issues in this book like the divergence of voiced Shang, the nature of the Ru tone, etc.Chapter six. Comparison and contrast of Dengyun Jingyao and related rhyme books. It mainly compares and contrasts Dengyun Jingyao with Shao Yong's Huangji Jingshi Shengyin Changhe Tu, Qiao Zhonghe's Yuan Yun Pu, Fan Tengfeng's Wufang Yuanyin, Li Guangdi's Yinyun Chanwei, Ma Ziyuan's Dengyin, Lin Benyu's Shengwei, and the series rhyme books and rhyme tables in Kangxi Dictionary.Chapter seven. The nature of Dengyu Jingyao. Dengyun Jingyao is generally considered to reflect the Northern Mandarin, but the phonetic system construction in it is controversial. By comparing the phonetic character in Dengyu Jingyao with the phonetic system of the Mandarin in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and with the character of Mandarin rhyme books, which are proposed by Mr. Wang Li, Mr. Geng Zhensheng and Mr. Ding Feng, we reached the conclusion that Dengyu Jingyao mainly reflects the character of the Middle Mandarin. On the basis of decoding Jia's view of phonology and analyzing the phonetic system character of Dengyu Jingyao, we think that Dengyu Jingyao mainly shows the character of the Middle Mandarin sound. The differences between them are due to Jia's dialect or Jia's intention to keep the old pronunciation and standard pronunciation or both.
