Geography of Art is an interdisciplinary field of research, which not only provides a new perspective on the New Art History, but also is one of the major branches of Cultural geography. The purpose of reiterating the historical status and irreplaceable value of Geography and the Space in the art research is to counterbalance the research dominated by the time and history. In the physical world, space and time are mutually inseparable, so that any courses in history would be related to certain spaces and certain geographic layers. Culture is usually represented through a series of specific forms and activities associated with space.Different cultures came from different regions, which created varied and symbolic culture landscapes. As an important part of culture, the arts are deeply rooted in the landscape. Through the creation and imagination, arts represent and explain various geographical landscapes, demonstrate vastly different ways to understand the world emotionally, give social meanings to various spatial relations, and describe the nature of life and the change of epoch. Which provides substantial material basis for art research? As a specific phenomenon that can be positioned, art has the inherent properties of geography. This article combined space and thinking of geography, which related to art, with the "field" structure, reveals the structure of geographical space and the social behavior which is regulated by the structure. The existence of Art image and style is not isolated, which is historically interrelated with behavior and thinking of certain geographical spaces in an organic, special way,and the relationship is the core of this research. We will shed some light on the geography of Chinese contemporary art in this study, to explore the significant impact of geographical environment on the Chinese contemporary artists and their works, to outline the inner differences and complex meanings in geographical landscape of art. This thesis is focused on the "place" consciousness to grasp different levels of spatial structure, and our investigation begins with the impact of dialectical macro-relationships of the world, country, and place on Chinese contemporary art, then goes to the micro-geographical research of villages and cities, anglicizing four unique urban space:Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. Through the successive analysis of different geographical levels, I hope this research could show a more symbolic landscape of art in different spatial areas, provide more perspective and methods of interpretation, and reveal the real relation between the art and place. Discarding the empty, abstract narrative, it may be able to make the research of Chinese contemporary art to be more practical.Thereby, we can revive the vivid wholeness in contemporary arts in geography space, comprehend the national character, identity and development directions of chine's art in the context of globalization, provide some advices on the future of Chinese art, and ultimately rebuild a new cultural and geographical identity.
