The novel'Dream of Red Mansion'is as successful today as it was over two hundred years ago. One of the signs of its success is the 100 plus operas that have been adapted from the book during its life time. Another indication of the books success is the influence it has had upon Chinese culture throughout the years.To understand the reasons for this books success, this paper will analysis its development and current standing from an historical perspective. This will be achieved by examining the book during three periods of Chinese political history. The discussion will focus on comparing and contrasting the work of other writers and artists, to see why some books and operas are able to make the transformation into classic literature and masterpiece opera while others are not.Chapter 1 begins at the time the novel'Dreams of Red Mansions'was first released. This was the period in Chinese history where China was controlled by the Qing Dynasty. Under Qing rule the book became very popular and over thirty operas were adapted from the book. Three of the main authors who wrote and adapted operas from the book are, Zhong ZhenKui, Wu LanZheng and Tang JingSong .Chapter 2 continues the story of'Dreams of Red Mansions'but this time the book focuses on the period when China was known as the Republic of China. The four main artists mentioned in this chapter are, Mei Lanfang, Ouyang Yuqian, Xun Huisheng and He Feifan. The growing popularity of the operas based on and around'Dreams of Red Mansions', seen an increase in the amount of artists involved in'Red Chamber'.Chapter 3 covers the period in which the People's Republic of China governed China. This growth in the popularity of'Dreams of Red Mansions'harvested a crop of influential opera repertoires and famous stars. However, it should be remembered that this was also the time that Crisis opera was becoming popular, causing significant challenges to the continued growth of'Red Chamber'production.Chapter 4 studies the opera of ShaoXing, and in particular this production of'Dreams of Red Mansions', considered to be a classic work of art. The analysis of this opera was based on the text, performance and artistic achievements of the opera, which are considered the reason for its charm.Conclusion: The conclusion confirms the ability of the novel'Dreams of Red Mansions'to be adapted to an opera. How"Red House"operatic appreciation laws will affect it popularity, and the future and present situation of'Red Chamber'operas.
