With the study of music aesthetics of Hegel, a German philosopher in the 19th century, and mainly through the art of music in his Aesthetics, this thesis reveals the dialectic relation between the means of expression of music and the content of music, and makes a thorough elaboration on the subjectivity perspective from which Hegel studied music, proving the great influence of Hegel's music aesthetic historically.This thesis consists of introduction, conclusion and five chapters.The introduction part introduces briefly the background of the topic, research purpose and the status quo of this research.Chapter one mainly deals with the philosophical, art philosophical and music viewpoints of Hegel, with introduction of some philosophical and art philosophical background related with music views.Chapter three is on the general character of music, revealing the emotional character of music content and the effects of music through comparison of different forms of art.Chapter three is about the particular definition of the means of expression in music. From the features of components, it illustrates the necessity of the means of expression in the process of interpreting the nature of art.Chapter four is on the relation of the means of expression in music and its content from the aspects of music as an accompaniment, independent music and the artist as executant.Chapter five is the critique of Hegel's ideas on music in terms of its value and limitation.Conclusion is on the dialectic in Hegel's Aesthetics of Music and explains how subject and music reach reconciliation in freedom.
