In the process of Chinese accelerating modernization, the radical changes of society and cultures are inevitable. We can feel cultural imbalance in the process of social changes, and the efforts people has made for adapting to the changes. In the constantly changing cultural system, cultural imbalance and balance is a moving development process, and the final test to the culture is the ability that this kind of culture adapts to the new surroundings. As a very important cultural factor, religion plays roles in the development of a single person and a community, even to the whole society.This is a case study about Tongshunjiie Church in the Old city, Hohhot Municipality in China. The subject study focuses on the evolution of the Christianity culture in Tongshunjie community during the past nearly 100 years.In the recent 20 years, the rapid rise of Christianity in China has received the widespread attention. Some scholars even use the word "blowout" to describe its quick development. As a result, religious research has become a heated phenomenon. However, most of the traditional researches on Christianity in Hohhot were conducted from the perspective of religion, sociology or history, while few of them studied from the angle of ethnology or anthropology. In this dissertation, the author focuses on some historical events related to Christianity and tries to study the evolution of Christian culture against the background of the establishment of a nation-state through lateral and longitudinal analysis, and demonstrates the dynamic relations among Tongshunjie church culture, the Christianity culture in Hohhot and the Chinese ethnic culture. This article discovers the phenomenon of Tongshunjie church Christianity culture and discusses the underlying causes of the phenomena in order to acquire an in-depth comprehension about Tongshunjie church culture and its multi-cultures and multi-religions harmonious coexistence system.Tongshunjie Church is located in Tongshun street in the Old city. It is an oldest church in Hohhot in which Christians are over 3,000 nowadays. It was established in the old city as early as in 1923. In 1880s, the foreign missionaries also arrived here. As a subject research, this article narrates the history of the religion development in Hohhot, studies the system of of multi-cultures and multi-religions, demonstrates the history and the present situation by combing the national minority Christianity events happening during the 100 years in the community, and explains the dialogue between the church and Christians.This paper includes the following parts:The introduction mainly introduces the research subject, the research method and the rationale of the topic. The first and second chapter introduces the natural, historical financial and national background of Hohhot, which emphasize the relations between Hohhot culture and "grassland eco-civilization". The third chapter describes the history of multi-religion in Hohhot. In the fourth chapter, the localization process of Christianity in Hohhot is introduced. The author introduces the development of Tongshunjie church afterl949 in the fifth chapter. This chapter mainly demonstrates that Tonshunjie culture has its continuity in the evolution and that stability is one of the features of cultural structure. The sixth chapter demonstrates the social life of the Christians, including how they became Christians, and how they became sensible believers with the help of missionaries, highlights "the changes" of a Christian outlook on life and social relations after adhering to Christianity.This article is a historical chronicles about Tongshunjie church in Hohhot. The author tries to show its 100 years of Christianity in Tongshunjie community from different angles through an integrated research on both ethnology and history, and provide an overview of the research in the study of ethnology and anthropology.
