The dissertation contains three parts and twelve chapters. In the first part, the author expatiates the importance of human capital in economic growth theoretically, analyses the theories of Economic Growth from Classical Theory, Neo-classical Theory to Neo-growth Theory systematically, and describes the formation of the concept and theory of human capital, and the evolvement of the status and role of human capital in different phases and theories, which give relative theoretical bases for the research on human capital and its contribution on economic growth.In the second part, the author analyses the development of China human capital since 1978, comparing it with the development of America, Japan and Germany. Then the author concludes the main approaches by which the developing countries are able to reduce the differences of human capital level between developed countries and them, the one is creating self human capital, such as education, training and science researches, the other is obtaining human capital from outside, such as migrations, international trades and technical licenses.In the third part, taking Guangdong Province as the research object, the author analyses the development of human capital in Guangdong and its cities. On the base of a great lot of statistical data, the author establishes the regression model of production functions of Guangdong and its cities, estimating and comparing the contributions of human capital to the economic growth from 1978 to 2000. Furthermore, the author analyses three factors that influence the real contributions of human capital, and the effects of economic policies and systems to human capital. In the end, the author presents some suggestions on the development of human capital in different areas in Guangdong.
