The dissertation makes a full review of the economic growth and economic development theory, comments on the complementarities that economic growth theory has been enriched by the economic development theory, analysis on the relationship between the economic structure and income distribution through the case study of Thailand to seek to find a feasible sustainable growth mode.Chapter one reviews the economic growth theory. Economic development theory has enriched the economic growth theory from the perspectives of economic structure and sustainable development. The new growth theory attaches more importance to economic growth quality, equilibrium development and sustainable development, which indicates that the sustainable growth mode has to be created on the basis of harmonious development of economy and society.Chapter two explores economic development in Thailand. With the interaction between government policy, industrialization and FD1 as a clue, the chapter looks back at the tracks of economic growth and concludes the characteristics of economic growth in Thailand.Chapter three analyzes growth quality from a specific point of view of structure changing. It researches on whether the economic growth is sustainable from the angle of driving structure including investment, technology and government policy. It studies the growth benefit shared by all income groups from the perspective of sector structure, i.e. industry structure and employment structure. It discusses the effects of resource location from the relationship between trade structure and industry structure. The conclusion of this chapter is that there exist many problems in sustainable economic growth, social development and equilibrium development in Thailand.Chapter four focuses on the theoretical social cost of economic growth, including mainly income distribution and social safety net. It points out that unequal income distribution will harm the growth efficiency, which will lead to halt of the sustainable growth. However, the social safety net will make up for this deficiency efficiently.Chapter five details equitable growth by exploring the economical data and the relationship between income distribution and growth, discusses that incomplete social safety net leads to the lack of presentiment system and guaranteed system in economy when confronting crisis. In Thailand, fast growth reduced the poverty rate, but analysis onincome of different groups and income structure of different places shows that the richest part of the population benefits the most from the growth and the poorer one is, the less he benefits. That is to say, most Thai people do not benefit from the growth. The weak social safety net is a hidden trouble of social development in economic growth process.Chapter six attempts to create sustainable growth mode on the basis of least social cost, which includes overcoming structural problems of sustainable growth, transmitting to the technology-driven growth, increasing ability building to improve income and to reduce poverty, changing government function to build efficient income redistribution system, collocating resource reasonably to ensure social stability and sustainable growth. It is obvious that Thailand and some other developing countries make a great progress, which has promoted social advancement and life quality. But, there still exist problems in the economic development process. By taking Thailand as the object of case study to examine the practical issues of developing countries, such as relationship between economic growth and economic development, equitable growth, sustainable growth, we find that fast growth has paid high social cost in developing countries in longtime. To ensure people's basic life safety and economic operation safety, government will have to pay more attention to the relationship between efficiency and equality so that a growth mode to guarantee sustainable social development will be built.
