Development Of Poultry Industry In China

China is a country with large population. There is the majority of its population in rural area. The people in rural area live on agriculture mostly. Development of agriculture influences more than 60% people in China, although the contributing factor of agriculture is less than 15% in the whole country's GDP. It is very important to develop agriculture in China.Animal husbandry has been a very important sector in Chinese agriculture since 1980's. From the early 1980's to the end of 1990's, the economical status of China had been increasing faster than before, especially for the food supply and demand. With the twenty years' economic reform and the development of market economy, living standard of people has been dramatically changed. Now people consume more food from animal farm than before.Poultry industry has developed in China since 1980's and developed faster than other industry in agriculture. In the year of 2000, the Chinese poultry industry, with nearly 1.21 million tons of output, is largest in Asia, is ranked the second in the world. Its output has increased almost three fold over the last decade alone. Although the system for producing poultry in China has undergone several changes, the industry has developed ceaselessly. The development of poultry industry is a very complicated system project in China. It involves many academic fields, such as production of forage, organization of smallholders in rural area, production of poultry, food security state, processing of livestock products, logistics of processing products and so forth.Chinese poultry industry is dispersed on three zones, which are eastern zone, middle zone and western zone. The eastern zone is a developed zone relatively and its output is about 60% in the whole output of the country. Poultry industry in east has definitely competitive power in the international market. Major export poultry has produced in the eastern zone. The middle zone has advantage in the cost of labor force,because the labor force cost in the middle is lower than the cost in the east. The western zone has on advantages definitely now, and its output is only about 10% in the whole output of the country.China has joined the WTO. Considering historical experience in China and successful cases in other countries, poultry industry in China will still have a great space to develop as the government adopt proper policy, although internationalization and globalization of poultry industry can not be reversed. In general, the poultry industry faces severe challenges, but there is a chance for Chinese poultry industry.To promote the development of poultry industry, Chinese government should pay more attention to smallholders in poultry industry and help them to enlarge their animal farm's scale, to increase the investment in animal farms, and improve the environment of animal farms. Forage enterprises should utilize every new technology for producing poultry forage. Animal farmers, most of smallholders, should improve their quality of products. Processing enterprises should speed up the restructuring their processing technology. Integrated companies in poultry industry can manage the production, processing and marketing of poultry. They can organize most of smallholders to join their companies. The organized smallholders have competitive power both in domestic market and in international market.
