This thesis orients on studying the transferring of peasants' typical beliefs during every crucial social transitional period since the beginning of the nineteenth century. The aim is to comb and grasp the pulse of the peasants' (they are also the main body of the Chinese populace) changes in ideology and spiritual beliefs, and to account for the social transition and social changes influences on peasants' spiritual world and at meanwhile state what roles the peasants' spiritual beliefs can play to the society. The final purpose is to provide the spiritual resources and rational reflections for the realization of Chinese rural modernization. This thesis is mainly about the general connotations, origins, characteristics, types and functions and their relative theories. And we analyze profoundly the characteristics of the Chinese peasants' beliefs in the traditional feudal society, and we explore the changes of the peasants' ideology and spiritual beliefs in every crucial social transitional period. We try to account for the social sources of peasants' belief changes, to see through the shock on their spiritual belief world and their changes of beliefs which causes by the shock in our modern social transitional period from different points of views. Therefore we can make a forward-looking discussion on how to construct the peasants' new spiritual belief in the new century. The main research approaches are guided under the Marxism classical theories, to combine the theoretical analysis with historical comparison, and to combine the social questionnaire with the individual interviewing cases. In the last part of the thesis we try to reveal to the people that good social transfer and transition need the guidance of the spiritual resources which is centered by the advanced cultural beliefs; and the spiritual resources centered by beliefs should adapt themselves to the social practical conditions: whether they surpass the social reality or lag behind it will do harm to the social transition and its development. The peasants are the main component of Chinese national situation. They not only have the urgent need on materials but also have the spiritual requirements. It won't be beneficial to the social transition to neglect the peasants' benefits, to ignore the peasants' thoughts and deprive the peasants of their spiritual food.
