This paper discusses mainly four questions: the first metropolitan region of China, enhancement of function about the central city, difference and clusters in industries, and competition and cooperation between regions. The Greater ShanghaiMetropolitan Region is a new point of view on discussing economic and socialintegration in Yangtze Delta, The Greater Shanghai Metropolitan Region is viewed asthe first metropolitan region in China, Shanghai is world city and primacy city ofChina, its centrality is first. Among several main cities in China, Shanghai has the besteconomic achievement, has the highest opening. Regions around Shanghai are thebest in China. We choose The Greater Tokyo Metropolitan Region, Ile-de-france andNew York Metropolitan Region, and compare from fours levels. Finding that TheGreater Shanghai Metropolitan Region has disparity such as gross city product, city'function, economic efficiency of land and etc. So Shanghai need more enhance city'function, it is need of the Metropolitan Region, the need of participating ininternational competition, the need of upgrading national competitiveness. Having the same or similar industrial structure among different regions isprevalent, but we think it is not and is normal. At the same time, industrial structureamong different regions also has very difference, especially trend of industrialagglomeration is more and more distinct. So we should research how to promoteindustrial agglomeration and how to raise international competitiveness of industries. It is the power of market that determine industrial structure among regions, notdetermined by government. Competition of absorbing FDI and regional protection are chosen for discussingabout the game relations of competition and cooperation between regions. We thinkthat competition will be a long theme, but the results of games between participatorsindicate that excess competition damage benefits of participators, and cooperation canincrease everyone's benefits. So we advise that regional governments should enhancecooperation when competition. At the end of the paper, we put forward some advicesfor healthy development of The Greater Shanghai Metropolitan Region. Of course, The Greater Shanghai Metropolitan Region is a abundant storehouse ofresearch, the paper is only pilot study on questions above. We hope inspire moreresearch and have help for economic development of The Greater MetropolitanRegion.
