Besides grain crop, vegetable is the crop which has the most wide cultivated areaand the most important economic status in China. The vegetables industry plays animportant role in Chinese agricultural and rural development. Thanks to the policy ofreform and opening up, Chinese vegetable industry has made great progress. For thevegetable industry, its cultivated area accounts for less than 12% of one of crops,while its output value accounts for 30% of the planting industry one and almost 15%of the agricultural gross one. Comparing to others agricultural products, vegetablehave absolute predominance in the trade volume of domestic and international.Nowadays, the vegetables industry has become an important component of agricultureand national economy. However, Chinese vegetable development faces a newsituation in 21st century. Some factors restrict its development. As China joins inWTO, Chinese vegetable industry enters into the age of overall internationalcompetition. As a big country of vegetable production and consumption, thedevelopment of Chinese vegetable industry will be greatly influenced bymarketization trend and WTO policy under the condition of gradual strengthenedeconomic globalization trend. The development of Chinese vegetable industry will beconfronted with immense opportunity and challenge with the background. Therefore, it has important theoretical and practical value to supplement thedeficiency of this research field by carrying on economic analysis and policy research,exploring endogenous development rule and operating mechanism, analyzing theinfluence on Chinese vegetables industry and vegetables market after the entry intoWTO, widening the policy space of vegetables industry under the agriculture frame ofWTO, and putting forward the corresponding and operable policy suggestions. With the direction of theories of economics, industry economics, agronomics,international trade, regional economics, technical economics and vegetables, the paperanalyzes some questions by using various methods such as econometric model,statistical study, comparison analysis etc and following the principle of combiningmacro-analysis with micro-analysis, empirical with canonical study, quantitative withqualitative analysis. Basing on the agricultural household management, the paperexplores the inherent development rule of Chinese vegetables industry and forms theprimary theoretical framework analyzing Chinese vegetables economy, which offersscientific theoretical direction and policy-making reference. The paper is composed of eight parts. The first part is introduction. In this part, some questions are showed, forexample: the objective,meaning and method of research, the framework and thinkingof the paper, and the domestic and international research trends. The next part is the chapter 1. The chapter 1 analyzes the distribution anddevelopment of global vegetables industry, summarizes the development course andstatus quo of domestic vegetables industry, and analyzes the opportunities &challenges and the development trend of vegetables industry. The chapter 2 analyzes the variety and characteristics of Chinese vegetablesupply. Taking Pengzhou city of Sichuan province as an example, the paper uses C-Dproduction function to study the key factors influencing vegetables output and thetechnique contribution rates of vegetables production in big and medium cities, andanalyzes the cost and benefit of Chinese vegetable production by the typical varietyand area. From the paper, the science & technology progress rate of Vegetables ishigher than the one of crops, but the scale has the main influence on the output forvegetables. It shows that the production and management of vegetables mainlydepends on expanding the scale. However, it is worth paying more attention thatovermuch fertilizer will result in the progressive decreasing of vegetables marginaloutput.
