The Communist Party of China, since its birth, has had a history of more than 80 years, during which it has gone through the revolutionary time full of reactionary reign of terror, has exercised leadership in the socialist construction during the period of China's planned economy, and has led China to enter a new era of reform and opening-up after the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Party Central Committee. Following the swift and influential development of the reform and modernizations, the problem of the transformation and the construction of the role of the Communist Party of China come out prominently day-by-day and thus become a vital subject that has to be solved cautiously. However, there aren't theoretical research results relevant to the subject. The author, having been paying close attention to the destiny of the party and nation, has carried on an exploratory research to this great subject, with an attempt to make a theoretical contribution to solving the problems. The dissertation is written under the guidance of materialist dialectics of Marxism. The research method of roles analysis has been applied to the dissertation from start to finish. Also, historical research method, experimental research method, comparative research method and documental research method have contributed. Based on the reality of China and with reference to the experience of other countries, the author's academic research aims at comprehensively and objectively grasping the true meaning of the role of a political party and the existing experience of mankind, according to them inspecting the practice and construction of roles of the Communist Party of China, and putting forward suggestions on how to build the role of the Communist Party of China in accordance with Chinese native conditions. Part One touches upon five basic problems: classifications of political party roles, ways in which political party roles are obtained, factors that influence political party roles, changes of political party roles, and construction of political party roles. Chapter One classifies the roles of political parties on one hand and on the other hand makes general descriptions of the state of different kinds of political party roles. The paper divides the roles of worldwide political parties into four types: democratic intermediary party, controlling authority party, authority-dependent party and movements-leading party. According to the differences in the degree of authority, controlling authority political parties are further divided into two smaller types: politically authoritative party and socially authoritative party. Each general description of political party roles involves their basic functions, external structures and behavior modes, and provides concrete instances for each type role of political party. Chapter Two is an investigation of the ways in which political party roles are obtained and elements affecting the role of a political party. It mainly wants to answer the following question: why are there such prominent differences between roles of political parties? After analyzing how each type of role is obtained, the paper expounds two factors that distinguish different roles: the external conditions and the internal factors of each party. The external factors are further classified into five kinds: system environments, social environments, political environments, cultural environments and international environments. As far as the party is concerned, the external conditions are fundamental in the formation of a political party role, and the role of the political party is, in reality, a result of the external conditions. The internal factors mainly include: the political position of a party and the political attitude of a party. The influence of the internal factors should not be ignored, for they...
