Qu qiubai has experienced kinds of roles in his lifetime. These roles can be divided into two role sets:the role set of statesman and the one of writer. The two role sets are integrated. There are several transitions between the two roles sets while the different roles transfer with each other inside each role set. The transition from the role of political leader to proletarian writer occurs from July.1928 to January.1931, which means from Qu qiubai’s residence in Moscow to the Fourth Plenary Session of the 6th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and it is reflected through the process in which Qu qiubai’s mental status transfers from role conflict to role burnout. This transition results mainly from four reasons. The first reason concerns the incompatibility between Qu qiubai’s character and his role expectation. The second one is the role overload caused by intertwined faction struggles, tense work and severe chronic disease. The third one refers to the persistent attack and suppression of Qu qiubai by Wangming clique and the fourth one relates to the sharp contrast between family love and brutal political struggles. The role transition of Qu qiubai from political leader to proletarian writer has typical meanings both for CPC and the intellectuals who devote themselves to the revolution in the same era. From July 1927 to January 1931, the difficult choice between politics and literature disturbs him continually. Finally, Qu qiubai becomes a proletarian writer under the influence of his character, his temperament and the surroundings. The role transition of Qu qiubai shows a typical phenomena which the revolutionary intellectuals might encounter:They must determine whether stick to revolution while constraining their own interests, or withdraw while only caring about their own pursuits. Qu qiubai sets an example to them. Confronted with perilous political circumstances and his own miserable experience, he overcomes the non-proletarian ideology tenaciously and continues the revolution with firm loyalty by connecting his personal interests and the revolutionary cause. He still makes contribution to the revolution as in the past through the new role which fits him more than before. He has devoted himself to the proletarian liberation. The role transition of Qu qiubai brings CPC valuable historical experience and thought-provoking lesson that the criticism and struggle must be carried out correctly in the principle of unity-criticism-unity inside the party. Last but not least, CPC must grope for the way of Chinese revolution autonomously.
