As an organization of state power, and the basic form of the Chinese people as the masters, the system of National People’s Congress (NPC for short) is a fundamental political system in contemporary China. The NPC system and its actual operating conditions are the foundation and prerequisite of establishing, developing various democratic systems, and exerting their influence in contemporary China. It reflects the essence and developing level of the democratic politics in contemporary China. The NPC is the core and the main content of the NPC system. The representatives of the NPC forms the tissue sells of the NPC. The duty-performance of the NPC representatives is the fundamental part of playing the roles of NPC and its system.Mainly taking political role theory as the analysis tool, this study chooses the duty-performance of the NPC representatives as the research object, conducts the research of the perform-duty behavior with an empirical research method, and the relevant experiences after the author himself being elected as a NPC’s representative. The author takes the description of role behavior features of NPC representatives as the research approach, analyzes the characteristics of NPC representatives’behavior, as well as the relationship between the corresponding role norms and role expectation, and presents the whole process of role generation and role-playing of the NPC representatives, thereby describes and explains the operation of the NPC, and relevant provisions and its functioning of the NPC. This paper aims to provide a new perspective for understanding the NPC system and its functions, and some features of the political system in contemporary China. The study holds that the role expectation of the NPC representatives is not only the foundation of generating the role of NPC representatives, but also the "script" and driving force of the role-playing of the NPC representatives. The understanding of the role expectations of individual representative and the impact on the individual performance ability in the re-socialization process make different representatives present certain characteristics in the process of role-playing. The other roles, particularly the other political roles that the representative carries on, have a critical influence on the role-playing behaviors of the representatives. In the process of role-playing, not only the behaviors of the representatives and the role behavior characteristics such as the consistency degree of the role expectation, role conflict, role dislocation and role overload have inner connection in the aspect of individual characteristics of the representative, but from a deeper perspective, his/her behavior characteristics much more reflect the characteristics of the NPC system and political system in contemporary China, as well as their deficiencies in some aspects. In order to achieve a higher degree of consistency between role behavior and role expectation for the representatives, and solve the problems such as role conflict, role dislocation and role overload in the process of role-playing, it is necessary to further develop and improve NPC system and other relevant political system through reform. The body of this paper is divided into five chapters besides introduction and conclusion sections. The content of the Introduction mainly introduces the reason and significance of this study, sorts out the relevant research literature at home and abroad, explains the main analysis concepts, and explains the purpose, research ideas, research methods, and possible innovation of the study. Chapter One mainly introduces the role expectations of the relevant political subject to the NPC representatives. The role expectation of the NPC representatives can be divided into social expectation and role self-expectation. Social expectation includes institutional expectation and moral expectation. Institutional expectation has the specific requirements to the role as the NPC representatives, which is the "script" that the NPC representatives act; moral expectation is a non-mandatory regulatory requirement, whose roles mainly depend on public opinions and innermost belief of the role players. Role self-expectation is the assumption that the role player targets his/her own behavior patterns. Role expectation bearers ultimately play a role through understanding of the role, and the understanding of the role expectation of the NPC representatives is the driving force and subjective premise of role-playing of the Representatives. Chapter Two mainly describes the process of selection and confirmation of the political role as the NPC representatives, and analyzes the main characteristics of the process and the possible influence on the role-playing of the NPC representatives. The generation process of the NPC representatives is the process of the role expectation of the political role as the NPC representatives specifically transforming into individual representative, and the representative-elect is the specific bearer and actor of the political role. Chapter Three mainly describes the role playing behaviors of the NPC representatives during session of NPC, and analyzes the characteristics of the behavior pattern of the NPC representatives during adjournment. Chapter Five mainly studies the relevant content, main route and characteristics of re-socialization of the NPC representatives and the influences on their role-playing behaviors. The paper finally summarizes the main conclusion of the study, and discusses how to play a better role as NPC representatives.
