The newly founded Communist Party of India (Marxist) has become not only the largest left party in India, but the largest communist party in the capitalist world as well after the tortuous development of over 40 years since it separated itself from the former Communist Party of India in 1964. The CPI(M) has made considerable achievements in both practice and theory. Against the depressing state of the world socialist movement, the achievements made by the CPI(M) has given rise to wide attention, therefore, the study of the CPI(M) makes a very important task in the study of contemporary world socialist movement.Guided by Marxism, the dissertation probes the theory and practice of the CPI(M) comprehensively and systematically. The dissertation comprises six parts: the introduction; the tortuous development of the CPI(M) and its exploration of the Indian socialist road; the Theory of People's Democratic Revolution of the CPI(M) and its present policies; the ruling practice of the CPI(M) in several states; the intercourse between the CPI(M) and other communist parties in both India and foreign countries; the experiences of the CPI(M), the problems it has met and its future development. The major contents are as the follows:The introduction illustrates the reason for selecting such a research subject and the significance of the study, the current research state of the subject, the way of thinking and methods used in the study, the innovation and defects of the dissertation.The first part mainly discusses and analyzes the tortuous development of the CPI(M) and its hard work for exploring the Indian socialist road. According to the different domestic and world situation and the developing state of the CPI(M) at different stages in history, the developing course of the CPI(M) since its formation can be divided into 3 stages: the struggle and exploration at the early stage of its formation (1964-1976); the development and exploration after the mid 1970s (1977-1989); the new development and exploration since the dismantling of the socialist states in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe (1990-). At different stages, the CPI(M) was faced with different domestic and world situation. As a whole, the development of the CPI(M) are full of frustrations, and it is because it conquered one difficulty after another that the CPI(M) has made considerable achievements. It is in this course that the Theory of People's Democratic Revolution has been formed, enriched and developed.The second part mainly expounds the Theory of People's Democratic Revolution and its present policies. The Theory of People's Democratic Revolution has comparatively substantial contents andits main contents are as the follows: evaluation of the world situation; views on the nature of the state and the state of Indian society; expounding of the nature, task, means and class strength of the People's Democratic Revolution; expounding of the tasks and programme which the people's democratic government will carry out; exposition of building a mass revolutionary party; views on various theoretical issues of socialism. The present policies of the CPI(M) mainly contain four aspects, namely political policy, economic policy, cultural and educational policy, and foreign policy.The third part mainly expounds the ruling practice of the CPI(M) in West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura. The Left Front Government of West Bengal led by the CPI(M) has made considerable achievements which are seen as the following: implementation of the effective agrarian reforms under the capitalist system; introduction of Panchayati Raj System; to promote rural economic development by formulating the favorable rural economic policies; to promote industrial development by formulating flexible industrial policies; to promote cultural, educational, medical and health development by carrying out favorable policies in these aspects; to protect the interests of the weak groups by taking effective measures; to ensure democracy and democratic rights by taking effective measures; defending communal harmony and rights of the minorities. The ruling practice of the Left Democratic Front Government of Kerala led by the CPI(M) can been divided into two stages. At the first stage (1987-1991), the Left Democratic Front Government made satisfactory achievements in agriculture, industry, politics, welfare of the masses, culture, education, medicine and health. At the second stage (1996-2001), the Left Democratic Front Government further promoted the development of the causes of grass-roots democracy, culture, education, medicine and health by carrying out the People's Planning Campaign, therefore, the difference between town and country was greatly narrowed and the coordinated growth between town and country was promoted. The Left Front Government of Tripura led by the CPI(M) has made the following achievements: protecting the rights and interests of tribal groups by introducing the regional autonomous system in tribal areas; implementing agrarian reforms and taking measures to promote agricultural development; taking measures to promote the secondary and tertiary industries; taking measures to protect the rights and interests of backward groups of the society; taking measures to promote the development of the causes of culture, education, medicine and health; taking measures to strengthen the building of infrastructure.The fourth part mainly expounds the intercourse between the CPI(M) and other communist parties in both India and foreign countries. The development of the relationship between the CPI(M) and the Communist Party of India in the past 40 years can been divided into two stages.
