From the history of other countries' modernization, it can be learnt that during the period when developing countries are converting from traditional society into modern society, large amounts of contradictions and problems affecting the political stability of society come into existence; therefore, preserving the social political stability has become the pre-condition for the modernization of developing countries. Judging from the realistic presentation of political stability in human history, there are two ordinary modes: static stability and dynamic stability. This article first has a historical review of China's political order and state of political stability from 1949 to 1978 and concludes that China had been in the static stability since the completion of its socialist reform in 1956. However, there exist many weaknesses in this state of stability , which gives rise to its inflexibility of social structure and standstill of political life; moreover, this stability is preserved by the external force. Although it can be sustained for a long time, it is not beneficial to the development of productivity and the progress of society. And then, this article makes a research on the conversion of China's state of political stability after 1978 and decides that the political stability, suitable for the China's socialist market economy, is a dynamic stability. Dynamic stability refers to the stability during the development of society. During the progress of society, the political system will continuously find out the unreasonable components in itself and eliminate or adjust them so as to make itself adapted to the social progress, and at the same moment, acquire the new, more reasonable harmony and stability. Today, at the beginning of the 21st century, during the course of our march into modernization, what we need is just the state of dynamic political stability. But how can we preserve the dynamic stability? At the horizontal dimension, this article carries out a research into how to preserve the political stability from different perspectives. The author's major ideas are as follows: reform and development are the basic approaches to keep the dynamic stability; authority and order are the basic factors of the stability, democratic organism is the realistic basis for the stability and the capability of the administrative party is the decisive element for the stability. In the final chapter, the article makes a detailed account of the relationship between the political stability and establishing a harmonious society and points out that political stability is the premise and basis for building a harmonious society, and the stability in this society must be the dynamic stability.
