Modernity is an ambiguous concept. Based on the rules of unification of the whole and the part, the unity of the static and the dynamic state and the relevance of modernity and modernization, the scientific socialism refers it to the new civilization, which has evolved from the modernization campaign since the 17th century. Modernization is a profound transformation from the traditional society to the modern one. It is the developing process of modernity. The socialism implies the man's seek for the good social system. In the West, modernity develops simultaneously with the socialism, while the pre-modern, modern and post-modern pattern co-exist in the socialist countries practicing the post-modernization. According to the classic socialist theory, the socialism means the surpass of the modernization, but in reality the socialism finds it hard to avoid the simultaneity with the modernization. The traditional socialism results in the frustration and the theoretical bewilderment because of the failure in coping with the relation between the socialism and the modernization. The former-Soviet and Mao Ze-dong's models are the two typical socialist practicing patterns, which had a great impact on the socialist modernization history and the socialist reality. The rational reconsideration on the issue enables us to learn: the setback and frustration of the traditional socialist model chiefly results from the one-sided comprehension of modernization and the disregard of the development of the modernity. Deng Xiaoping put forward the target and the task of the socialist modernization and expanded the idea from the economic and technological aspects to the various fields of the social life. With the Socialist Nature Theory, Socialism Initial Stage Theory, Market Economy Theory, "Three Favors" and some other new ideas and standards, he opened up the process for the transformation of the socialist paradigm. Only by developing the intrinsic production power, and realizing the transformation from the traditional socialist to the modern socialist with the basis on the production socialization can the socialism develop deeply into the future. However, modernity is a double-edged sword. Its innate contradictory and the practical fission would be sure to bring about a series of social problems. On one hand socialism affirms the positive role of the modernity; on the other hand it restrains and dissolves the social fission that may be brought about by modernity. What we seek is the positive role, but we should be alert and try to overcome its negative role. Utopian idea shows the human's expectation for the ideal social state, meanwhile it conveys the critic spirit of modernity.
