Contemporary Russian Military And Diplomatic Studies, Theory And Practice

As a major military power of the world, Russia has a strong tradition in military diplomacy. It has established a complete military administrative system with sophisticated decision-making regimes and formed a unique military diplomacy style. The dissertation intends to take a Marxist approach to analyze Russia's tradition and practice of military diplomacy. Meanwhile, the dissertation provides an overview and commentary on Russia's military diplomacy through the combination of geographical politics, foreign decision-making, military coalition and containment theory, with an emphasis on its fundamental ideas, connotation, evolution, constitution, operation, foreign decision-making regimes, characteristics and trends,The dissertation includes seven chapters. Chapter one defines military diplomacy and clarifies the research objects. Chapter two makes a brief overview of the evolution of military diplomacy from the Tsarist Russia to the Soviet Union, and to today's Russia. Chapter three delineates a theory framework of military diplomacy by borrowing diplomacy theory, military theory and security theory, and also, this chapter induces the guiding principles, the fundamental ideas and the strategic art of military diplomacy. Chapter four analyzes the legal foundation, the management regimes, operations and procedures in the framework of foreign decision-making regimes. Chapter five generalizes the institutional and practical modes of Russia's military diplomacy from its global, regional and national level practices, of the antimissile diplomacy, the CIS diplomacy and the international military technology cooperation. Chapter six shows three major main features of Russia's military diplomacy including balancing, containment and pragmatism. Chapter seven predicts the trends and the future influence of Russia's military diplomacy.
