Leszek Kolakowski is one of the influential representatives of Marxism in Eastern Europe in the 20th century. In his view, Marx is a philosopher and Marx's philosophy is an entirety, among which there are three motivations, namely, Romanticism, Prometheus salvation thoughts and ideas of Rationalist Determinism in the Enlightenment Movement. Marxism may be interpreted in three different motivations and the corresponding relations between them. It is the three motivations that highlight the utopian nature of Marxism, the salvation tradition and the historical determinism orientation; In his view, the three different motivations blend in Marxism, constitute the overall philosophy of Marxist thought and determine the development of Marxist thought and the fate of Marxism.Leszek Kolakowski believes that Marx has always been a philosopher paying attention to human freedom and liberation, and humanism is the subject of Marxism. He tries to diminish the significance of orthodox Marxism by means of adding humanism to it. He believes that there is no obvious gap between the early and late Marx's thought, and Marx formed his own philosophy in the early period. Although many terms like alienation were no longer used in the late days, he never changed such core ideas as alienation and humanism, which were more sophisticated and scientific in his late days.Although Kolakowski's research expands our understanding of Marxism and provides us a new perspective to interpret and develop Marxism, I disagree with him on his total negation of Marxism, especially his blame of Marxism and historical materialism on his assertions that Marxism is utopian and ideological. In my opinion, Marxist solutions against the capitalism at that time has not been entirely applicable for us today, but the spirit of Marxism has not been obsolete, especially its spirit of science and revolutionary practice. I believe that nowadays Marxism is still full of energy and vitality, and we should adhere to and develop Marxism in the new historical stage.
