Workplace Learning, as a mode of vocational learning, has evolved several great changes in the history of vocational education. It is well-acknowledged that apprenticeship, a certain embodiment of workplace learning and close to a way of life, has cultivated countless craftsman of generations since medieval times. In modern times with the wide-spread use of machines in the production field and gradual popularization of institutionalized education, learning from work transformed into a time-consuming and low-efficient talent cultivation mode rather than the only way of acquiring a craft. Dominated by the knowledge-base economy and motivated by the trend thought of life-long learning, workplace learning has recaptured people's attention once again in the contemporary age. At present workplace learning has developed into various kinds of work-based learning programmes widely cooperated by enterprises and industries in the world of work. The recovery of workplace learning and reviewing the value of ancient apprenticeship is a revival of handicraft spirit? Or a recall of the original vocational education mode? This paper focuses on all-round development of students,exploring strategies for continuously improving students'cognitive competence,mental and value development from the standingpoint of'labor practices'rather than classroom learning in school.In terms of research methodology,through the introduction of historical investigation and social theory based on technical axis principle, this paper attempts to analyze the value evolution of workplace learning in the development of vocational education and rethink the current problems and challenges confronted by school-based vocational education system. The most contributions both in theory and practice of this disseration are:firstly, to question WPL route under the traditional concept of learning, reconstructuring new understandings of some important concepts such as, working and learning, education and training as well as knowledge and skills.secondly,to remind VET practioners of recoganising labor practice under the concept of Marxism and its historical and social quality.thirdly,to persuade VET practioners not to treat workplace learning simply as a mean of training skills or examining the effectiveness of knowledge learned.Chapterâ… :Introduction. By looking through the lens of internship programme based on the investigations, this section reveals the essence of research question:'is work itself, a form of educational activity? If it is then what educational value can we benefit from?'According to the interpretation of the question and literature review, the research idea and approach have been proposed.Chapterâ…¡:Historical review on the value of workplace learning in the development of vocational education. With some related historical literature for reference and analysis tools of socio-cultural activity theory as well as social constructionism thoughts, this section examines the roles and values of workplace learning that played and created in the historical evolution of vocational learning. It aims to investigate its gradual marginalization within the development of vocational education during the transition from handicraft industry age to industrial age and process of the introducing mass-production based on machinery and institutionalized education.Chapterâ…¢:Realistic views on the value of workplace learning. Tracing back to the origin value of workplace learning across history stages aims to restore a certain vocational education mode which integrates learning and working,virtues and life as much as possible. However, history can never be restored and replicated. Therefore only understanding the current situations and transcending the history can we achieve the revival of the workplace learning fully. At first, this section interprets realistic backgrounds for the revival of workplace learning from three dimensions namely, economic forms, the world of work and organizational structures.Then compared by the history and reality, the nature and new connotations of workplace learning added by new era have been revealed. Finally the question that what kind of workplace learning is of the most value for vocational education has been further discussed from the perspective of pedagogy. At first this section reflects on modernity crisis of vocational education based on value evolution of workplace learning and propose the connotation and value of vocational education under the concept of workplace learning further. Secondly, the request for school-based vocational education to reshape work-education relationship has been asked according to the current challenges faced. At last deeply into the practical level, it aims to explore how to optimize the implementation of work-based learning programme in school and its evaluation results.Chapter V:Realistic picture of back to the value of workplace learning. Emphasizing on the concept of'connectivity', this section illustrates several ideas and strategies on how to achieve the integration of work and learning, the connectivity of learning and subjectivity as well as the cooperation of school and workplace from the perspectives of knowledge integrations,curriculum of work experience and construction of subjectivity respectively.
